Let’s start with the basics: What is Neuroscience?
Neuroscience is the study of our nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and networks of nerve cells (neurons) throughout our bodies. This study unravels the mysteries of how we generate thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and our individual perceptions of the world. So much in life is less about reality, and more how you feel about a situation. Two different people could have the same situation presented and have two totally different perceptions of “reality.” Before we get into the depths of why this is, knowing the brain and basic functions is essential.
So, what exactly is the brain?
The brain, one of the most vital organs in our body, serves as our command center. Weighing approximately 3 pounds and is 2% of our body weight, the human brain is a scientific wonder. Next time you step on a scale, know that 3 pounds isn’t all bad! The true importance of our brain cannot be overstated—it controls our voluntary and involuntary actions, processes sensory information, regulates emotions, and stores memories.
The brain contains billions of neurons, specialized cells that transmit information through electrical and chemical signals (action potentials). These neurons communicate via long projections called axons, forming intricate networks that enable the brain to function properly.
Molecular Neuroscience: What Makes Our Brain Work?
The overview of molecular neuroscience introduces us to the fundamental jobs and parts of the brain and nervous system. It covers the following topics:
Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system; they transmit signals between different parts of the body and the brain.
Axons are the long projections of neurons that carry signals away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands.
Brain structure and essential functions: Understanding the different regions of the brain and their roles in functions such as movement, sensation, memory, and cognition.
